Messy Church at Jamestown celebrates 10 years
Near the end of 2014, a team of people from the churches in Jamestown met to discuss children’s ministry in the area.
At that time, each congregation had only one or two families with children attending their regular Sunday services. We decided to collaborate to provide an opportunity for families to connect with church. Several ideas were discussed, but we decided to go with the Messy Church format to incorporate the intergenerational atmosphere. Our team has consisted of members from the Anglican, Bible Fellowship, Catholic, Lutheran and Uniting churches. For a number of years we held a youth Bible study as part of the ministry, but that age group has now moved on, and we are now welcoming a new round of young people in the lower primary age group, along with their families.
On Sunday 15 June, the Jamestown Messy Church celebrated 10 years! The theme centred on the story of the prodigal son. During our celebration time, we gave thanks not only for the father who welcomed his lost son home, but also for our heavenly Father who has been welcoming people to Messy Church in Jamestown for a decade!
We celebrated with soup and sausage rolls, followed by a big chocolate sponge cake. Over 40 people were in attendance, including mums, dads and grandparents.
Jamestown Messy Church runs once a term in the Jamestown Uniting Church. Each session involves story time, craft time, worship and fellowship over a meal. The local churches take turns providing the meal. It is a fantastic time of people sharing faith and friendship, with the local churches working together.
