Drought Relief: Supporting Our Rural Communities
At the recent SA-NT District Convention of Synod, valuable time was spent hearing from delegates impacted by the ongoing drought. While recent rain has brought temporary relief, the road to recovery is long and may take 12 to 18 months for many communities to rebuild.
Discussions focused on how we can best support congregations and members—financially, spiritually and practically. One key encouragement for metropolitan congregations was to visit rural regions, shop locally, and worship with country congregations. Simply showing up can make a real difference.
At convention this year Mallee Lutheran Parish shared how they are connecting with their local community through their presence at regional shows. Parish volunteers set up stalls at their local shows to provide free tea and coffee and a welcoming space for conversations with the community. They have also given out over 1800 gift bags to children with goodies from Lutheran Media and other Christian activity sheets. Pastor Peter Heintze encouraged those in metropolitan congregations to visit the rural areas and support country shows.
There are opportunities coming up in October to connect with country communities, meet local people, and support the Mallee Parish stall. Whether you come for the day or make it a weekend, your presence will be appreciated.
- Pinnaroo Show held on Wednesday 8 October
- Coonalpyn Show held on the Saturday 18 October

Other ways to support our rural communities
Pray
Bishop Andrew Brook invites us to pray.
You may like to use this prayer in your congregation or small group:
God our Heavenly Father,
in a dry and dusty land, our soul thirsts for you.
Look down with mercy upon us.
Hear our prayers of concern for our land,
for our people in distress,
for our industries that suffer,
for all who are affected by the drought.
Send rain to replenish our parched land,
and bring life and hope to your creation.
In you alone we trust; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
