St Petri Nuriootpa Hosts Inspiring “O Lord, Open My Lips” Workshop

6 August 2024

by Pastor Adrian Kitson

St Petri Lutheran Church in Nuriootpa recently became a hub of learning and fellowship as it hosted the “O Lord, Open My Lips” workshop. This event drew nearly 80 participants from across numerous congregations, some traveling significant distances to attend. The workshop was designed for individuals who assist in the various roles that contribute to the life of worship in their local churches.

The day began with a reflective and inspiring morning prayer, led by four students from Australian Lutheran College (ALC). The atmosphere was filled with a shared sense of purpose as voices united in prayer, setting the tone for the day. Following the prayer, participants heard an encouraging address from Rev. Dr. Tim Stringer, Principal of ALC, who underscored the importance of lay leadership and participation in worship.

The workshop then moved into a series of specialized electives. Facilitated by a mix of active and retired pastors, as well as ALC staff, these sessions were designed to equip attendees with practical skills and insights. Topics included how to read the Bible effectively in worship, lay reading and preaching, music and song leadership, ushering, preparing Bible talks, and navigating the growing realm of digital worship. The diversity of sessions ensured that there was something relevant for everyone, regardless of their role in the church.

The event wasn’t just about learning—it was also an opportunity for fellowship. After the electives, participants came together for lunch, where conversations flowed about their experiences in worship service roles. Many expressed how uplifting it was to connect with others who share similar responsibilities, providing mutual support and encouragement.

This workshop was particularly special as it marked the culmination of a week of intensive study for ALC students, focused on liturgy and worship. The students, having immersed themselves in learning about the traditions and practices of Lutheran worship, were able to put their knowledge into action by participating in and helping to lead parts of the workshop.

Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive. Many highlighted the value of the practical sessions and the chance to reflect on the significance of their roles in worship. There was a strong sense of community, with attendees noting how the workshop not only equipped them with skills but also reminded them of the importance of working together to create meaningful and God-honoring worship experiences.

In the end, the “O Lord, Open My Lips” workshop was more than just a training event—it was a time of spiritual renewal, learning, and building deeper connections within the church community. The participants left not only with new skills but with a renewed sense of purpose in their volunteer roles, ready to continue serving their congregations with dedication and joy.
