A Century of Faith: Celebrating 100 Years at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Myrla
18th August, the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Myrla marked a significant milestone—its 100-year anniversary. The celebration was filled with a sense of nostalgia and joy as around 90 people gathered to reflect on the church’s rich history and enduring community. Many attendees had deep connections to the church, including the grandson of Mr. H. J. Zibell, the man who generously donated the land for the church building before 1924.
The day was made even more special with the presence of six pastors: Neville Kriewaldt, Rob Strelan, Chris Gallasch, Avito da Costa, Chris Georg, and Mat Eckermann, who all contributed to the service by sharing Bible readings, delivering the sermon, and leading the liturgy. Their collective leadership added to the spiritual significance of the event.
The celebration was filled with fond memories, including a humorous recollection from a Ladies Guild meeting during a mouse plague, where mice jumped in and out of the women’s baskets! Another memorable fact was that, for a time, the church was blessed with seven organists, an unusually high number for a small congregation.
Five past pastors also shared their personal reflections, each speaking fondly of their time at Myrla. A common theme that resonated in their memories was the warm and joyful spirit of the congregation—a testament to the vibrant and welcoming character of St. John’s.
The centenary celebration was not just a look back, but a reminder of the strength and resilience of the church community as it looks forward to the next chapter in its story. Here’s to many more years of faith, fellowship, and shared memories at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Myrla!
