Lutheran Care launches Winter Appeal 2021
It’s that time of year again. Temperatures are dropping and most of us are rugging up, whipping up a batch of hot soup and switching on the heating. For too many South Australians however, luxuries like regular hot meals and a warm home are simply out of reach. Those who relied on programs like JobSeeker and JobKeeper last winter to make ends meet will no longer have that support. That’s why this winter Lutheran Care is preparing to offer support to many more South Australian families.
As part of Lutheran Care’s 2021 Winter Appeal, the organisation has shared the story of one local family who they have been working with for about seven years who in a relatively short time had experienced a huge amount of hardship. Jim and Debbie had been struggling financially since both had been forced to quit their jobs in construction and hospitality. Their two sons had been diagnosed with severe mental health disorders so they became full time carers for their children. Then, their daughter Sarah was diagnosed with cancer and things went from bad to worse. Struggling to afford basic necessities and buried in debt, the family turned to Lutheran Care for help.
Lutheran Care was able to support the family through the Emergency Relief program, which provides groceries, warm blankets and clothing vouchers for some of the most vulnerable members of our community. Jim and Debbie were then connected with one of Lutheran Care’s Financial Counsellors, who helped the family with debt and money management, learning the lifelong skills required to keep their heads above water and be in a more comfortable position with their finances. These are just two of Lutheran Care’s many programs that assist people facing hardship. This Winter, Lutheran Care is encouraging the generous local Lutheran communities of South Australia to help them make a difference to local families like Debbie and Jim’s, by making a donation to the 2021 Winter Appeal. Every donation makes a difference and donations over $2 are tax deductible.
