Rocking the church
Rocking the church was the message Pastor Reid Matthias sent home with all the young people who attended Spin Camp in January.
It’s a radical statement, but one that young people need to know, so they can make a difference in the church as they are its future.
Held at Camp Kedron, Barmera, Spin was filled with building relationships, old and new, and many activities. Campers and leaders took every opportunity during free time to play a game of cricket on the lawn. Even Pastor Stephen Schultz joined in on the action!
A personal highlight was seeing the campers getting involved in worship by joining an enormous conga line and watching everyone do the actions of ‘the butterfly song’, which is such a great reminder of how good our God is.
I have had the privilege of being involved with Spin for four out of the five years it has been running. Even though I was not there on the very first one, I have seen the vision for Spin shine through. Each camp theme has been portrayed in a fun and lively way. Whether it is through Bible verses, a skit or the message given by the camp pastor.
I have seen many leaders come and go over the years, each one of them being influential and sharing what they know about God. These leaders have used a massive opportunity to pass the baton of faith onto the young people who will be an active part of our churches in the future.
This year’s camp really highlighted the importance of our church sitting in a unique position to spread the good news that changes lives. It is camps (and youth ministries) like this that form a solid foundation of every young person’s faith. This is highlighted in Philippians 3:14 – ‘I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus’, which was one of our theme verses at Spin this year.
Only a couple of weeks after camp, there was a special moment when some of the campers came to my church (for a friend’s confirmation). After the service, they went around high fiving everyone.
This came as a bit of a surprise to me, but I knew they took the message from Spin 2018 to heart and were actively pursuing it.
What can you do to rock the church?
